Jabatan Akauntan Negara Malaysia (Accountant General’s Department of Malaysia) was established with the establishment of the Accountant General position under the Ministry of Finance before Malaysia achieved its independence. According to the department’s record, the first Accountant General position was held by En. G.G.T Browne in 1946. Up till now, JANM has been headed by as many as 13 Accountant Generals. In 1967, the leadership of JANM was assumed by a local.
Since several decades ago, the role and function of JANM had experienced several changes in line with the expansion of the public sector. It started from a small building situated at the Life Insurance Corporation of India Building at the road junction of Jalan Melaka or Jalan Perak (Mountbatten Road), before moving to the Sultan Abdul Samad Building in Kuala Lumpur and subsequently to Block 8, Government Office Complex, Jalan Duta, Kuala Lumpur.
Now, JANM is centralised in Putrajaya consisting of 8 divisions after the Pensions Trust Fund Division was incorporated as a statutory body under the Retirement Fund Act 2007 (Act 662) with effect from 1 March 2007. In line with the objectives of JANM which places priority in the delivery of efficient and effective services to its customers, JANM has now expanded to 25 branches throughout Malaysia.
