Universiti Malaysia Kelantan (UMK) memerlukan individu yang boleh bekerja dengan pengawasan yang minimum (independent), bekerja dalam satu pasukan (teamwork), dinamik, kreatif dan inovatif untuk membangun universiti. UMK is the 19th federal public university to be established in the country and its establishment was announced in the 9th RMK presentation by the then Prime Minister of Malaysia, Dato' Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi. The proposal was then passed in a Cabinet meeting on 14th June 2006.

Universiti Malaysia Kelantan; the only autonomous public institution of higher learning in the state of Kelantan; was established with the core business of entrepreneurship education. Therefore; UMK adopts the philosophy “Entrepreneurial University and Entrepreneurship is our thrust”. In the near future, three main fields are given the highest priority :
- Entrepreneurship and Business,
- Creative and Heritage Technology
- Agricultural Industry and Natural Resources

In the mean time, language and soft skills are also provided to the students. All of the programs are offered to the students with the intention of producing human capital of the highest calibre for the country, who are inculcated with a first-world mindset and entrepreneurship values. It is hoped that the graduates produced will go on to contribute to global prosperity through constant improvements of SME capability and capacity building of as well as contributing to the development of an entrepreneurial society; with the use of ICT as an enabler.
